I've been saving money for a car for months now.

I've racked up to about $1,400.

Meanwhile, TurboTax's 2009 Calculator predicts a $1,200 tax return for me.
So I planned to build a Gaming Rig with my Tax return. However my plans have changed.
I've decided, since I'm having a hard time finding the car I want right now, to hold off on that until I get my tax return. And I've decided to spend $1,107.70 on building the most amazing computer I've ever owned and the most money I've ever spent on anything in my life.

Then by the time I get my tax return and save some more money from work, I'll be right back where I started, probably better. I'm guessing by Feb 10th or so, I'll have $1,600 or so. Then it's back to Car hunting.

But for now, OMFG. I've been working mainly on that. So I'm just now attempting to start working on the "interface". As the code is, relatively functional. Well, it's functional. Just not the way I want it. Right now it counts down to a date. I plan to create a input dialog box for how long the counter should last. (EG. 12 hours, 15 minutes, etc) instead of date based countdown.

Also working on how I could possibly get it to remove the 0's / empty place holders and have it center like the destiny does. Windows XP x64 sucks. So with WinXP x86, I feel like I'm missing out on the full potential processing power.

Win7 x64 addresses all of these issues, and the laptop hardware itself seems to run better. Also, better battery life.

Windows 7, being Vista re-built from the ground up, but still based on the same concept, has a lot of backwards compatibility with Vista compatible drivers and software. So even if it doesn't say '7', most Vista stuff runs on 7 without a single hitch. I did have some issues though with Windows XP stuff. However I think I have yet to master the true XP compatibility mode, or maybe most of my issues were just driver related and drivers can't be emulated.

Perhaps it's all in my head, but I feel as though since my laptop was meant for Vista and not XP, it runs better with 7 vs XP. I really do.

Windows 7 also has a lot of new built in programs and features that kind of catch up with today's tech and software. One of these additions to my surprise, is an image/ISO burner feature. Which seems to work rather well. Also some of the new accessories are nice. More advanced calculator, built in screen cap tool and the recorded help thing, is pretty neat. Also gadgets have some potential.

I guess some of this stuff was probably in Vista, but I never used Vista. Hard to believe Vista has been around 3 years already. I'm 3 years behind on this concept. Windows 7 is a huge leap from XP.
At the moment I am using Windows XP x64 and I'm really hating it. I plan to hit up Win7ENT in a day or so and give that a spin.

Do I recommend Win7? That depends. If your computer is new within the last 3 years and you currently have Vista, then yes. And I recommend a CLEAN INSTALL. Dear please for the love of god, Updating from one Windows OS to another is problematic at best.

However if you're humming along with Windows XP just fine and are happy with it, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. If you really want to try Windows 7 to see if you like it, mess with someones computer who already has it, or install it on a test machine if you are geek enough to have one. Or a virtual machine? If that's even possible with 7, don't know for sure but probably is. Honestly, above all else, if this is your scenario, just wait until Windows 7 SP1 comes out. That's when they've REALLY worked most of the bugs out. Then SP2 is golden if you actually wait long enough for that.

That's just my two cents on the matter.
But always consider Linux. Ubuntu is the most user friendly version of Linux and is widely supported. Google has answers to most questions.

[SG-64] The virus/malware/spyware problem.

voIs there a virus peeking through your encrypted files?
A malware program, causing malfunctions and kernel dumps?
Spyware and adware pestering your with ridiculous ads?
Who you gonna call?

Well, no one, really.
The problem with Malicious Software these days, is the game has changed.

Back in the day, you had the virus. A small file, programmed for ill-intent. Identity theft, credit card fraud, deleting your files or rebooting your computer for kicks and other such things like setup botnets for DDoS attacks and so much more.

Then it evolved into Spyware and Adware, malicious programs designed to forcibly put ads for not-so-kosher products in your face. Then came the derivation of malware, a similar program designed to destroy your operating system from the inside out if it so chooses, Just for the hell of it.

These programs originally were not all that complex and some of them could be removed manually or rather easily by an updated Anti-Spyware or Anti-Virus program. Then spyware programs started building in redundancy. So it had backups and a couple copies of itself. It took annihilate them all at once to truly be rid of it. It was difficult, but it could be done.

But things have changed, the malware and viruses have evolved. They now have become hydras. Cut one head off, two more replace it. Containment, is all but impossible. How do Anti-Malicious Software programs work? They scan for files that contain "signatures" or "traces" of code known to be spyware or a virus, etc.
However viruses have evolved to the point where they can constantly re-arrange their own code, thus becoming extremely difficult for Anti-Virus programs to track down. And then there's the Hyrda thing... deleting one copy of the virus, with it's last breath, tricks the OS into letting it spawn itself again or it might just randomly spawn extra copies of itself with no outsider intervention. Self-replicating... mm, like the bug form replicators in SG-1. Nasty buggers. Anyway, this massive self replication takes up processing power and resources, which is why your computer may seem to get slower and slower when infected, until it grinds to a halt and implodes on itself. lol, just kidding on the last part. Viruses also tend to like to invite some friends over. 1 virus gets in, and it opens the door for more to be downloaded onto your computer.

One time, 2-3 years ago, I accidentally clicked 'no action' on my virus scanner, letting the virus in, and I saw command prompts pop up, and programs install themselves within minutes. It was quite the sight.

At the beginning of this year, I had an infection break past my shields. I fought it for 3 days. Until finally giving in. I reformatted XP for the first time in 8 months, or rather, since owning my most recent laptop.

Then, even so, in the backups of my data, the plague invested my installation exe for Ventrilo. When I went to reinstall my programs, the hell started again. Instead of just sweeping the hard drive that contained XP, after that I also had to spend many hours scanning my massive amounts of data on my external hard drive.

That was one nasty bastard of a virus.

I've come to the conclusion, that it is not worth wasting countless hours fighting an unstoppable beast.
When a Windows computer becomes infected, I don't screw around. I backup all important personal data, wipe the hard drive clean and start from scratch. Complete annihilation and re-installation of the OS seems to be the most prudent course of action.

But of course right now you're probably thinking, what if the personal data backups are infected? Well, since this has only happened to me twice, in 10 years one recently and once, many years ago, as of now, I don't scan the backups because it takes varying amounts of time, I'd just rather not put into it. And also, I'd rather not think a personal data file is infected, because then that means, whatever precious data was in said file, is now as good as lost because the file may never be repaired.

Some of your may not like this idea, some may think it's extreme. To those of you, from personal experience, it may not be fun, but I've personally been through a lot worse. This is the lesser of evils, the way things have changed in the Digital World.

Viruses and malware of the present, have become the HIV and AIDS of computers. Eradication, only in death. Fortunately for computers, there's a reset button, so to speak.

However the best way to avoid this mayhem, is to never become infected in the first place.
Staying away from cliche porn sites or porn sites in general is a good way to avoid viruses....... this is how the average idiot gets infected. Don't lie to me. I've seen temporary Internet files you didn't even know existed buried deep in your OS. *Especially* if you use Internet explorer. The things I've seen. Cannot be unseen.
Hackers take advantage of you sexually driven idiots and lure you in, and then exchange (or tag along) what you want with god knows what untold horrors of malicious software.

Second most popular way to get infected, is to be the victum of massive IP range port scanning. You can get infected from this type of attack without even browsing the net in any combination the following ways: Be directly connected to the internet, aka connected to the net without a Wired or Wireless router, (Which acts as a NAT or Hardware "Firewall", which helps to keep out most random attacks) But everyone these days has a wireless router, so that's becoming more and more extinct. Also, with no Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Software Firewall, Windows Security Patches, or just sucky ones if you even have them.

Next most common way to get infected with a virus, using Limewire if you're not careful.
Limewire (P2P networks in general anymore) have slowly devolved into a cess pool of 95% viruses. It used to be only like 15% a few short years ago. Now it sucks.

For all inexperienced users downloading warez, pirated versions of expensive software. Sometimes, hacker's will throw out there, completely legitimate programs, but it'll come with something extra you don't want. It's like finding a $100 bill on the street contaminated with something horrifying or fatal. You got something awesome, but yall gonna die. When using torrents, this is relatively uncommon and easy to spot. Reading comments helps, but not all the time. Some torrents will have just as many comments praising it as they will saying VIRUS VIRUS DON'T DOWNLOAD! So being 50-50, it's hard to tell. Also, Anti-virus programs flag keygens as viruses because Software companies pay Anti-virus people to make that so, to deter piracy.

So ultimately, with torrents, you can never truly be 100% certain. It's an art, really. You've just gotta make a judgment call sometimes and some people just don't have the gift or intuition to make the right choices at the right time.
Although, downloading from a guy who has uploaded many torrents and has a good track record, usually helps. Unless it's something rare, stay away from an account that's only ever uploaded 1 torrent. As we geek folk like to say...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . _________
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ./ It’s a trap! \
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . _,,,--~~~~~~~~--,_ . . . .\ ._________/
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . ,-‘ : : : :::: :::: :: : : : : :º ‘-, . . \/. . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .,-‘ :: : : :::: :::: :::: :::: : : :o : ‘-, . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . ,-‘ :: ::: :: : : :: :::: :::: :: : : : : :O ‘-, . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . .,-‘ : :: :: :: :: :: : : : : : , : : :º :::: :::: ::’; . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . .,-‘ / / : :: :: :: :: : : :::: :::-, ;; ;; ;; ;; ;; ;; ;\ . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . /,-‘,’ :: : : : : : : : : :: :: :: : ‘-, ;; ;; ;; ;; ;; ;;| . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . /,’,-‘ :: :: :: :: :: :: :: : ::_,-~~,_’-, ;; ;; ;; ;; | . . . . . . .
. . . . . _/ :,’ :/ :: :: :: : : :: :: _,-‘/ : ,-‘;’-‘’’’’~-, ;; ;; ;;,’ . . . . . . . .
. . . ,-‘ / : : : : : : ,-‘’’ : : :,--‘’ :|| /,-‘-‘--‘’’__,’’’ \ ;; ;,-‘ . . . . . . . .
. . . \ :/,, : : : _,-‘ --,,_ : : \ :\ ||/ /,-‘-‘x### ::\ \ ;;/ . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . \/ /---‘’’’ : \ #\ : :\ : : \ :\ \| | : (O##º : :/ /-‘’ . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . /,’____ : :\ ‘-#\ : \, : :\ :\ \ \ : ‘-,___,-‘,-`-,, . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . ‘ ) : : : :’’’’--,,--,,,,,,¯ \ \ :: ::--,,_’’-,,’’’¯ :’- :’-, . . . . . . . . .
. . . . .) : : : : : : ,, : ‘’’’~~~~’ \ :: :: :: :’’’’’¯ :: ,-‘ :,/\ . . . . . . . . .
. . . . .\,/ /|\\| | :/ / : : : : : : : ,’-, :: :: :: :: ::,--‘’ :,-‘ \ \ . . . . . . . .
. . . . .\\’|\\ \|/ ‘/ / :: :_--,, : , | )’; :: :: :: :,-‘’ : ,-‘ : : :\ \, . . . . . . .
. . . ./¯ :| \ |\ : |/\ :: ::----, :\/ :|/ :: :: ,-‘’ : :,-‘ : : : : : : ‘’-,,_ . . . .
. . ..| : : :/ ‘’-(, :: :: :: ‘’’’’~,,,,,’’ :: ,-‘’ : :,-‘ : : : : : : : : :,-‘’’\\ . . . .
. ,-‘ : : : | : : ‘’) : : :¯’’’’~-,: : ,--‘’’ : :,-‘’ : : : : : : : : : ,-‘ :¯’’’’’-,_ .
./ : : : : :’-, :: | :: :: :: _,,-‘’’’¯ : ,--‘’ : : : : : : : : : : : / : : : : : : :’’-,
/ : : : : : -, :¯’’’’’’’’’’’¯ : : _,,-~’’ : : : : : : : : : : : : : :| : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : :¯’’~~~~~~’’’ : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : | : : : : : : : : :

So I hope this was an informative, if not brief and to the point, history of viruses and related malicious software.

SG-64 Mission Report - Boody Mill Road

So, It's your typical Friday for me. Grocery, 5p-10p. Nothing unusual happened at work. Jamil and Jessica French did stop by, which is cool because I was going to text them later to see if they wanted to hang out, because I was going to be out late one way or another tonight. Stuck at my dads work for two hours, or hang out with Coworkers? I chose the latter.

So we went to Wal-Mart to visit DScan, I picked up some soda and a videogame I wanted. (Ghostbusters for the Wii! Hell yeah! shouldn't have spent the money... but well, been almost three months since I bought myself anything other than food.) Overall, we were in WalMart for like an hour and a half.

Then we were driving through Woodbury, and Jamil got pulled over for running an 'Orange' light.

Then we started heading for Boody Mill Road, out of boredum. It's about 12:45AM at this point.

The last redlight before we reach BMR, Jamil decides to peel out when the light goes green. One of the vehicles at the light was a Chevy pickup. Dark in color, most likely Navy Blue or Black. At the moment I'm fairly convinced it was Navy blue Chevy Silverado, possibly 2007-2008. But the headlights seemed more square than rectangular, I'll have to look into it more later.

The truck was 10 car lengths behind us, but at this point we had no idea what was next. We casually turned onto BMR, and we got a little ways down the road when, ROAR. A vehicle ROARS around the corner and onto BMR. We thought for a moment it was a cop, then discovered it was a truck and had a brief moment of relief. He speeds up though, we will a little concerned but not too much. Then his headlights went off and we FLIPPED OUT. Jamil PUNCHES it. The truck gains on us. Jamil approaches the curve with the guardrail, I tell him to brake early, then accelerate out of the turn. Not sure if he followed my advice, but somehow the tires stuck and we made it through the turn. Apparently we had more balls than the other driver, this is where we gained some ground on him, he turned his lights back on to make it through the turn, but then shut them off again with us back in sight as he gained on us.

For those not in the know, Boody Mill Road doesn't have much lighting. So without headlights, it was really hard to see the truck behind us, until he was so close to our bumper, the red brake lights illuminated/reflected off his headlights, which made it look as if the devil was on our bumper. At one point, he was only a few feet from us, when Jamil slowed down as Jess was begging him to. Then I told him to HIT IT, because he was getting closer and closer and about to hit us. I tried taking pictures with my phone, I left the flash on because I thought it might distract the creepy dude chasing us, but, in hindsight I wish I had the flash off, because all it did was bounce off the back window of the car and blow out my pics, I wish I had picks of the truck/lic plate.

http://i36.tinypic.com/w1s9k1.jpg

http://i35.tinypic.com/11iztxk.jpg

I had a good view of the plate with my eye... but I didn't think to memorize it. damn, I'll know better next time.

We reached the end of the road and Jamil was HAULING, so we made some distance on him. We had to stop at a stop sign and just as we were about to go, he was coming up behind us. The road was vacant, I told Jamil to GO GO GO. We started up Jamil started hauling out of there and the dude was on our bumper. We sped up and put some distance between us and him.

Then after going a ways, he slows down, almost to a stop, turns his lights back on and puts his hazards on while stopped. We're going WTF? We stop, watching him. His lights go back off, he moves again. He's coming around the corner. He starts swerving like CRAZY in the dark. We tell Jamil to get going! We went around another bend and we were out of sight range for a moment, so I told Jamil to turn ASAP. We did and he didn't see where we went and we effectively lost him for a moment. We double backed and started stalking him.

We thought we had tracked him to his home, watching from just over a block away, in the darkness we saw him pull into a driveway and turn his lights off. We sat there for a minute, to see if he would start moving again. He didn't. I told Jamil to go after him, but he chickened out and decided to run. We retraced our steps and got back to the place again, we drove by where we saw him park, there were no Chevy pickups anywhere in the immediate area and the end of that road was a court.

We figured that, he probably didn't live there at all and it was a trap. It appeared, where he pulled into the driveway was just before the entrance to the court. If we pulled into he court, and he pulled out of the driveway, we would have been effectively trapped.

Increasing the WTF CREEPY SHIT Factor ten fold.

Craziest night of my life, ever. Not that it's saying much, but still.

Rising

Not quite as I planned.
Well... I wanted to update this on a nearly daily basis but that didn't really work out.
Hopefully now I'll have more time and less stress since my move is complete. I'm now relocated.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa_Up4myonk

I was hoping for another way, looks like I got a whole lot more than that.

I'm now staying with my dad, whom is going to charge me much less for room and board, giving me the boost I need to save much needed money, where as before I was dishing out almost all of my pay to my aunt, crippling my progress.

I also plan to start a jobhunt this month. If I can save more money and get a better paying job, I might just be able to reach Escape Velocity in 2010 and rid myself of the gravitational pull of the black hole that is New Jersey. Here's hoping.

SGU Premiers tonight (Friday night, 10/2). Can't believe it didn't leak. I'll actually have to watch it live like normal people. Monday night, the Bakery Manager had to call out due to a relative being in the Hospital or something. Score. No one to train me, means I got to be on Cashier. Not one of my favorite things to do, but, regardless better than Bakery.

Worst Customer, these 3 Mexican guys in their mid 20s who barely spoke English.
It was a large order, subtotal was $249 and some change. Then when I hit total, something else must have come off and it changed to $246 and some change. But I didn't see this. So, meanwhile, my drawer is about to lock out, they paid $250 in cash I need a pickup before I start the next order.

In the process of doing the pickup, I forgot to double check if they needed any change, I closed the drawer and began scanning the next order, one of the Mexican guys had like just 2 things.
After I scanned the first thing, the one dude then just now notices I missed his $3 change.

I checked the receipt, he was right. I owed him $3. It took me FIFTEEN minutes to get him to understand that I couldn't open the drawer *RIGHT THAT MOMENT* because I already scanned an item and that I needed to finish this TWO ITEM order before I could open my drawer again and give him his change.

Once that got through his thick 'no speckenz za english' Mexican head, they were happy and on their way... at least it was a short shift. 4p-8p

Personal Log - Unscheduled Excursion

Let's start a little further back... it's been a long, day... or two or three.

Friday. Got up a bit earlier than a normally do. 12:00pm. Did three loads of laundry and then it was time for work... I don't even remember how that went... I just remember it looked mostly like crap because Thursday got borked. I really didn't do much to fix it then... I just did other stuff like usual.

Through-out Friday there were a few things that slammed against my mental shields. But nothing too substantial, yet. However when I got home and started talking to a couple people some more random comments came up that hit a few sensitive cords and my shields had, had it. I was toast. The shields collapsed. I had a seriously depressed mental breakdown episode.

Going into Saturday, not feeling much better, I more or less stayed in bed until it was time for work. I've been doing this a lot lately... partly because I don't go to bed until around 7am and partly because I lack motivation to do... anything, right now.

Now Saturday night on the other hand, I really tried to fix things at work. Made everything as nice as could be for the Sunday rush. Got home, no one really online... not much of a surprise. Not that I really was in the mood to talk. It's 1am. I went downstairs to use my uncles computer while he was asleep to make a trailer for SG-1 Season 4. I've recently got a Co-worker into Stargate and he's on S4 now. So I stayed up all night again, until my uncle woke up at 6:38am working on my trailer. I didn't get to finish it since he wanted his computer.

Sunday

Went to bed at 7am, woke up at 11:43am. Supposed to be at work at 12:00pm. Grabbed my stuff and bolted. Clocked in at 12:07pm. Just in time before I would need an override for being late. Just made it by the skin of my teeth. Another... wonderful busy Sunday. Had some annoyingness from Co-worker(s) and a couple PIA cranky customers. But also some good came out of it, one Customer is going to say nice things about me to my boss, which hopefully will get me one step closer to get him to stop trying to teach me how to do my job that I already know how to do...

Meanwhile, on break, voicemail. Zach and Heather have invited me to hang out after work.
Immediately following work, we went to a local park, called Field of Dreams. We hung out there for about half an hour before returning to Heather's house. Hung out with people. Talked, ate. Then everyone went to bed, around 10:30pm me and Zach leave to go trashpicking in Pitman, we found nothing of value, no old computers, nothing. Disappointing.

I wanted to get some soda, so he decided we should go check out the new Wal-Mart that just opened. Place is huge. I mean, seriously, huge. It looks bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. I felt small being in there. The ceiling is high, the aisles are almost as wide as a side-street. You could easily fit two cars wide in a good amount of the aisles. The area around the registers is so wide open, they are so far apart it's crazy. We were in there like 30 minutes and we still only saw 2/3 of the store.

We both got soda and Zach bought a small pack of Pokemon cards. He got a reverse holo Mudkip, which is now in my possession for Internet Meme win.

And thus, my current status. Zach is asleep, I have everything I need to survive off-world except something to charge my cell phone. All this crap, and I nor anyone else has a mirco usb cable. So my battery is critical and I won't be able to recharge it until tomorrow night, like 8:30pm-ish after I get home from work.

Right now Zach is making me realize the true potential and value of having a car. The average person, just uses a car to travel around. But Zach has a stockpile of a wide variety of things to survive out of his car. Extra clothes, usually some soda, digital and electronical forms of
entertainment.

I'm limited to what I can carry in my messenger bag. My bag of holding, from ThinkGeek to be exact. Granted it's usually enough to get me by in most situations. But if I had a car, more specifically a station wagon like he does, I can just imagine the possibilities. Prepared for any scenario at the drop of the hat, on the go. I would love that. This makes me think I really gotta put more effort into getting a car. And.. a permit/license... of course.

I could almost live out of a station wagon. I would probably spend a lot of time in my car. Make a little geek-nest in the back with the seats folded down. Nice large cargo area to make a little fort like thing in. And I already have my portable deep cycle battery, my semi-portable power source. Enough power to give my laptop life for a full 24 hours on a full charge.

I would so totally hack my car. Customize it, find every possible way to get the most out of it to fit my needs and desires. Muhaha.

Well I'd say that about covers it for the weekend recap and this post has gone on about long enough, probably tl;dr worthy.

Tomorrow is a wonderful unknown... I get to be in Bakery! Lame. Originally I was off, but I've said no to being called in a few times lately... I couldn't say no to my boss again. Especially not right now. Not sure he's entirely happy with me for some reason. Gotta score some points whenever I can, so then I can just back off and coast and relax for a while until he gets that yes, I do my job. Just as much or even more than anyone else does...

Out.

About This Blog, Initial Post

Digital Gate Network is my personal preference for a 'project codename' I've had many, but this is the only one that has stuck lately, I've recycled it a few times.

I have created this blog, because for the longest time, I've used chat logs and telling my friends about my day as a personal journal database for myself. If I ever wanted to look back on something I did or try to remember something that happened, I immediately search the chat log database of mine.

However, as things change, people change, lives change and I change, Lately, I have found myself not chatting as much as I would like to, as I have in the past.
I'm finding that my sleeping and work schedule, is not matching up with others at all. Some people I would talk to on a regular basis, recently, lines of communication have dropped flat dead for a relatively extended period of time.

I am one of those people, who just loves to archive... everything. For the sake of it mostly. I suppose you could call it a hobby. I typically also have a bad memory. Or I used to. I find that, much like the old cliche writing things down helps you remember. I personally find that typing things helps me remember them.

And, even if I don't remember them, since text takes up little storage space, I can maintain a vast library of the experiences of my life. So if I forget, I can always go back to my database and remember. In a way, it's almost like the movie Memento.

Since chatting is at an all time low for myself, I've decided to start a blog, so that my memories may live on. Either with myself, my friends or anyone else who finds interest in the pitiful perils of the life a lowly solitary geek like myself.
So here goes. Perhaps this blog will evolve into something more, ultimately I would like that. A combination of personal interests and perhaps also a homeworld for Internet related projects I may pursue in the future.
